Yesterday - Sunday 4 May - saw the first of this season's Club competitions, the Pairs.

Thirty-two players entered, drawn into 16 pairs by Competition Secretary Cynthia Hamilton and matching a more experienced player with a newer one. In congratulaing everyone who took part, Cynthia reported 'I think we had a good day albeit it was a little chilly; but it didn’t rain - always a positive!'

The semi-finals saw Kelly Brown - winner of this title last year alongside Paul Williams - and Shirley Stoten, her partner this year, play against Tom Smith and Rob Furniss, the latter pair playing very well to get to the final. The other semi-final saw Cathy Hopwood and David Hamilton take on Tony Guy and Andy Brown, Cathy and David triumphing by the tightest of margins - on a measure in an extra end following a winning final bowl from David.

'The final between Tom & Rob and Cathy & David got the supporters cheering them all on,' said Cynthia, with Tom & Rob taking the title with a score of 8 shots to 4.

In addition, Lesley Taylor won a bottle of wine in the Spider which the newer members of the club now know is something that lives in Cynthia's briefcase.

At the prizegiving, Cynthia congratulated particularly Tom and Rob as the winners, while not forgetting all those who took part, before offering 'A big "thank you" to Evan, our greenkeeper, who not only set up the green in the morning but, with a little help from some of the players, then put everything to bed.'

As befits the day before a Bank Holiday - it was indeed A Grand Day Out. Congratulations to everyone - and a thank you also to Cynthia for her extremely efficient organisation of the day.
