County competitions
As well as the three district leagues in which we field teams, Andover Bowling Club also participates in the county competitions run under the auspices of Bowls Hampshire, to which association we affiliate annually..This gives us the chance to participate as a Club at this level against teams from right across the county, while individual members are also entitled to enter Bowls Hampshire competitions.
In some great news for the Club, Jackie Kingston was once again selected to represent Hampshire in the Johns Trophy. This prestigious competition takes place annually on a round robin basis, with Hampshire drawn to play Berkshire, Isle of Wight and Wiltshire. Jackie lead on one rink in the home match against Berkshire which took place at Banister Park on 7 June (result TBC). Well done, Jackie!
Matches arranged at Club level for 2025 are as follows:
Tony Allcock Trophy
(preliminary round): Sun 11 May Yateley B 34 v 40 Andover
(Round 1): Sun 25 May Andover v Oakley
Gordon Bazley writes: Andover won at Yateley B 40 - 34. Playing on a difficult green, Robin Kingston's rink, along with Lesley Taylor, Gordon Bazley and Jackie Kingston, won well; Pete Anthony's rink (Sue Milton, Cynthia Hamilton and Les Reeves), whose green was also difficult, lost against a good Yateley rink. The overall win by 6 shots takes us into the next round, although sadly we were not able to get the better of a good Oakley side.
National 2 Fours
Thu 15 May Cove v Andover
Gordon Bazley writes: lost overall. We held on to win by one on Pete Anthony's rink with Mark Slade, Mick Corden and Ray Cozze. However, on Robin Kingston's rink, Andy Carnegie, Evan Lewens and Gordon Bazley lost heavily against an extremely strong Cove rink.
Men's Top Club
Mon 19 May - Yateley v Andover
Gordon Bazley writes: this match consisted of five disciplines; the first team to win three wins the match. Andy Carnegie won in the two woods; but Mark Slade narrowly lost in the four woods singles and Robin & Evan narrowly lost out in the pairs by 19-20 while Gordon's rink lost after 17 ends. Tony's pairs were three down with a couple of ends to go, but didn't finish as Andover were already 3-1 down by that point..
County Men's Championship
Fri 13 June - Andover v Sports Centre (4 rinks); unfortunately Andover were on the wong end of a salutary lesson in this one.
Thornbery Trophy (women's teams)
Sat 21 June - Andover v Romsey (2 rinks)
Sat 5 Jul - Banister Park v Andover - sadly lost by 19 shots, and on both rinks albeit only by three shots on one of them; so our innterest in this competition also comes to an end.
Hants and Berks Cup
Fri 27 June - Andover v Oakley (3 rinks), sadly the match was lost.
Mixed Top Club
Littleton v Andover (1-4)
Jackie Kingston writes: On a very hot day at Littleton this morning we played the MTC and came away with a 4-1 win. Andy Carnegie won 21-9; Jackie Kingston won 20-19 after 28 ends; Sue Milton/Peter Anthony had a good tussle but lost 12-17; Nickie Furniss/Dave Froude/Gordon Bazley won 15-13; and Anne Hughes/Ray Cozze/Lesley Taylor/Robin Kingston won 19-11. A great morning finished off with homemade cakes and tea.
Waterside v Andover (2-3)
Jackie Kingston writes: Andy Carnegie won the men’s singles 21-15, while Cynthia Hamilton had a great game, coming in as reserve, but lost 21-14. Evan Lewens and Lesley Taylor won the pairs 25-16; while Nikki Furniss, Dave Froude and Bernie Oram had a tight game all the way and only lost by one shot, 16-17. Sue Milton, Cindy McLaughlin, Ray Cozze and Robin Kingston handsomely won the fours, 20-5. A great day and friendly hospitality from Waterside, with a lunch provided afterwards.
The next match was against Atherley, played at 11am on Sunday 3 August at Meon Valley Bowls Club, Bishops Waltham, and was the last round of two teams for the south region of the county. Unfortunately, the match was lost 4-1: in the men’s singles Andy Carnegie lost 21-8; Jackie Kingston won the women's singles 21-12; while in the mixed pairs Evan Lewens and Lesley Taylor lost 23-5. In the mixed triples, Nickie Furniss, Dave Froude and Gordon Bazley lost 22-9, while in the mixed fours Cynthia Hamilton, Cindy McLaughlin, Ray Cozze and Robin Kingston lost 20-9. Thanks go to all who took part on the day; and also to Cathy Hopwood, Bernie Oram and Les Reeves who travelled as reserves/markers. Best of luck to Atherley in the rest of the competition.
At individual level, Andover Bowling Club is also represented in the following competitions:
Men's pairs
Andrew Carnegie and Robin Kingston won their 3rd round match in the County Pairs on 30 June against a pair from Sports Centre BC in Southampton. A great game to watch. The next round takes place next Monday at home against another young pair from Sports Centre BC.
